Leadership / PROFESSIONAL PERSPECTIVE

Leadership Is What Happens Between Decisions

The quiet work of clarity, accountability, and trust.

Leadership is measured less by a title than by what people experience when decisions are difficult.

It is tempting to think of leadership as the big moments: setting direction, presenting a strategy, or making a consequential call. Yet much of the work happens between those moments.

Clarity is a form of care

When a team does not understand what matters most, even talented people can spend their energy in different directions. Clear priorities are not a constraint on initiative; they create the conditions for it.

Accountability begins with the leader

A useful leadership question is not only, “Did the team deliver?” It is also, “Did I create the conditions in which they could succeed?” Ownership means being willing to examine both.

The standard is not perfection. It is consistency, candor, and a willingness to improve.

A practical reflection

This week, choose one conversation you have been postponing. Bring clarity to the expectation, listen carefully, and leave with an agreed next step. Trust grows through repeated follow-through.
